RECAP

Going into the game Northwestern was ranked #6 in the nation after a win the previous week over Oklahoma. But they had lost their quarterback, Dick Thornton to injury in that game. Iowa coach Evashevski missed practices during the week due to an illness.

Hawks jumped out to an early lead, and put the game out of reach quickly. It was the largest conference margin of victory since a 56-0 win over Purdue in 1922. Four long touchdowns were demoralizing to Northwestern, including a 45-yard TD run by Jerry Mauren, a 38-yard pass interception for a TD by Mauren, a 70-yard interception for another TD by Larry Ferguson, and a 53-yard TD run by Sammie Harris.

The defense held the Wildcats to only 65 yards rushing.

Northwestern was coached by Ara Parseghian, who said it was the best Iowa team "we have ever played". "I don't think there is anyone in the conference that will be able to cope with them."
