Oregon State then used some reverses in the second half that the Iowa defense was not prepared for. and cut the lead to 9-7. On the ensuing kickoff the Beavers tried an onside kick which failed. Four plays later Iowa scored a touchdown to kill the momentum. Oregon State then answered with another touchdown to make the score 16-12 going into the fourth quarter.

Larry Ferguson ran for 141 yards on 8 carries. Including an 85 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The touchdown ended Oregon State's chances of beating the Hawkeyes.

Iowa benefited from the new "wildcard" substitution rules, which allows for one player to sub in after each play. In the previous seasons, the player being subbed for could not return to the game.

Iowa remained fairly healthy during the game. The worst injury was John CalhounJohn Calhoun, Iowa's punter who was stung by a bee on the sideline.
