RECAP

Iowa jumped to a 14-0 lead, and almost scored another TD or FG to increase the lead. But #10 Washington rallied with 18 straight points to take a 18-14 halftime lead. They scored two TDs (missed one extra point), and added a FG and a safety. It seemed the Hawks could not stop their rushing attack. Washington's Junior Coffey had 131 yards on 20 carries on the day, but the defense rose to the occasion in the 2nd half, and the Hawks added two TDs in the 4th quarter to pull out the upset win.

Karl Noonan tied a school record of 11 receptions in the game (including a TD in the 1st quarter and 146 total receiving yards), but left the game with a gash on his hand. He tied the record with Jim Gibbons (vs Minnesota in 1957) and Don Norton (vs Wisconsin in 1959).

lowa's Rich O'Hara made up for dropping a potential TD pass in the first half by catching a 6-yard TD to take a 21-18 lead early in the 4th quarter. Iowa shut out the Huskies in the second half, and added a Gary Snook short TD run for insurance. Snook finished 19 of 32 passing for 215 yards, including 2 TD passes.

Dave Long had 11 solo tackles and 8 assists on the day.

The game was televised regionally on NBC in color, and members of the 1939 Ironmen team were in attendance to celebrate their 25th anniversary.

PLAYER GAME QUOTES

Robert 'Bob' Mitchell I think we were lucky to win by 10 points. Washington was a good hard-hitting team. This was a great game for us, since we built up our confidence that we can win, during the second half. The team as a whole was up more for this game than against Idaho last week.
