RECAP

The Iowa offense struggled once again, hardly managing any scoring threat against the Wildcats. The Iowa defense held strong, A chilly 30 mile an hour wind out of the north limited both offenses as Northwestern only passed two times on the day. Iowa tried a new lineup on offense including replacing John Niland at guard. Niland, was used as a blocking fullback in certain situations during the game.

Northwestern's only touchdown came on a penalty aided drive in the third quarter where they converted a 4th goal from the one yard line that was a questionable call.

Coach Jerry Burns again tried the strategy of punting on third down. This time it was late in the third quarter on Iowa's 15 yard line. Burns had called a time out so that the Hawks could punt with the wind. The punt ended up going only 28 yards and was muffed forward by the Northwestern return man, who was able to recover the fumble gaining more yards because of it. A few plays later Northwestern was in field goal range and kicked a 38-yard field goal with the wind. It was the final nail in the coffin for Iowa's inept offense going down two scores in the fourth quarter.

PLAYER GAME QUOTES

Missing photo for William Restelli I thought I was in the air both times before the whistle blew when they charged me with piling on. The coach says keep hitting until the whistle blows so I did. I would do it again in the same situation. Those officials have slow whistles and fast minds.
-- William Restelli
Restelli on the three personal fouls for late hits against Northwestern.

Dave Long Once I heard somebody say there was a red flag on one play. I looked around and told the nearest official, 'I'll bet against Iowa.' The official didn't say anything; he just laughed.

COACH GAME QUOTES

Jerry Burns I must say in praise of Niland that he took his demotion to the second this week with a fine attitude. Often a player has a different attitude. But Niland hustles. He's a good kid. What he doesn't recognize is that he must play with full intensity on every play. You know, we have no depth on this squad. Niland is smart enough to realize that we replaced him only as a psychological move, because the other boy does not have nearly as much ability. The other boy also realizes this.
-- Jerry Burns
Burns on his decision to bench All-American John Niland in the mid of a 8 game Big Ten losing streak.
