RECAP

In a nationally televised game on ABC, Iowa scored a late touchdown with 1:25 left when Mike Cilek entered the game for injured QB Larry Lawrence, and connected with Kerry Reardon for a 6-yard TD pass. Alan Schuette kicked the winning extra point. Rich Solomon picked off a MSU pass to end the game.

Interestingly, the game clock had actually stopped with 12 minutes to play, and the game was actually played for 61 minutes. Only fans had noticed the malfunction, and the coaches and official timer were notified of the issue after the game was over. After the game was over, fans were setting off fireworks next to the stadium, and lit fire to a homecoming monument.

It was the first matchup between the two schools where neither team was highly-ranked. Highlight video only contains a tiny bit of footage around a commercial. Go to the youtube site to read the entire explanation. Full game video starts in 3rd quarter with Iowa leading 9-3.

It's what we call a bump-and-run. The defensive man, of course, is alert against my trying to get open in the flat to the right. So I drive toward the inside, and keep drawing him in. Finally he decides I'm trying to fight my way to the left, so he commits himself. Then I jam my foot into the ground and turn as sharply as I can to the outside. I couldn't believe I was that far open when Mike Cilek saw me.
