The Hawks won for the 4th time against the Cyclones in a head-to-head matchup this season, winning with a combined 113-29 record. The Hawks dominated from the start, leading 19-0 at one point.

Steve Martin put the Hawkeyes on the board with a narrow 6-5 victory over Cale Sponsler, followed by #4 Terry Brands's 23-11 major decision over #7 Dan Knight at 126. His brother #1 Tom Brands won a 20-7 major decision at 134. #7 Troy Steiner defeated Rob Watt 16-4 at 142. #6 Doug Streicher defeated Torrae Jackson 12-4 at 150.

The Cyclones got their first win at 158, when #2 Cyclone Steve Hamilton defeated Iowa freshman Keith Trammel 15-5.

At 167 pounds, Iowa's #7 Bart Chelesvig squeezed out a 6-5 triumph over #9 Matt Johnson. Don Finch replaced Pat Kelly at 177 and handled Iowa State's Brad Knouse, 16-9. At 190, Iowa's #3 Brooks Simpson scored a 14-6 win over #12 Jim Nelson.

Freshman Mike Ferroni (also an offensive guard on the football team) got his first wrestling match at Iowa, replacing John Oostendorp, but lost 14-1 to Todd Kinney.
