For only the 2nd time in school history, the Hawks failed to score a victory in a season, ending with an 0-11 record. Coach Frank Lauterbur was fired on Tuesday last week after refusing to realign his coaching staff. He ended his coaching career at Iowa with a 4-28-1 record. The Hawks gave up a safety in the 2nd quarter on a blocked punt out of the end zone, and were only down 2-0 at halftime to the 10-point favorite. But a fumble early in the 2nd half gave MSU momentum, and they scored 8 plays later. Iowa gave up two interceptions, 3 fumbles and had some costly penalties. Dirk Kryt kicked a stadium-record 49 yard FG for the Spartans, and later added a 28-yard FG in the 4th quarter.

The Hawks finally scored late in the game when QB Butch Caldwell ran 78 yards on an apparent broken play. The 2-point conversion failed, as did the ensuing onside kick.

Future Notre Dame coach Tyrone Willingham started at quarterback for the Spartans. After the game Michigan State coach, Denny Stolz said this about the Iowa fans. "The crowd here is really something. It didn't seem like there was anyone in the stands, but do they ever make a lot of noise. It was like playing at Notre Dame. I was very surprised as I thought they had given up on their team after the season they had this year."
