Iowa coach Bob Commings decided to play for the win and not the tie, making the decision late in the 4th quarter to go for it at mid field, instead of punting away to the Orangeman. Iowa was unable to convert the 4th down giving the ball back to Syracuse, who was able to get into field goal range on a controversial pass interference call on Bobby Elliott. Five foot seven 140 pound "soccer-style" Syracuse place kicker Dave Jacobs kicked the game winning 41-yard field goal with :22 left to play. Syracuse had turned the ball over 5 times to the Hawkeyes, but Iowa was unable to convert those turnovers into points. The Hawkeyes only completed 6 passes for 76 yards.
