It was the 50th anniversary of the dedication of Kinnick Stadium, however things did not go well for the Hawkeyes that day. In fact the air conditioning and lights were not working in the Iowa loccer room at halftime. They Hawkeyes got off on the wrong foot at the coin toss when they won the toss and were supposed to take the wind, however one of the captains blurted out the wrong call and Iowa took the ball to start the game.

Minnesota's pass offense designed by offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan was very sharp on the day. Minnesota QB, Mark Carlson completed 14 of 17 passes for 230 yards. Marion Barber Jr scored the games first touch down to give Minnesota a 10-0 lead in the 1st quarter.

Iowa was able to answer with a Mosley touch down in the 2nd quarter, but were outmatched in the second half. Unable to stop the Gophers passing game and turning the ball over. Gordy Bohannon, who started at QB lost a fumble on a hard hit on Iowa's first drive, Bohannon was hurt on the play. Phil Suess would replace him after Bohannon threw a costly interception later in the game. Dennis Mosley had 74 rushing yards and a touchdown. His touchdown tied the single season record for touchdowns, and his yards moved him past Ed Podolak for career rushing yards.
