Iowa made its first appearance in the Rose Bowl in 23 years, while Washington was making its 3rd appearance in the last 5 years.

The first quarter was scoreless, as Iowa's offense struggled, and Washington had trouble hitting receivers.

In the second quarter, Huskies freshman Jacque Robinson started to take over, moving them down the field, and scoring on a short TD run. Another short TD run put the Huskies up 13-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Husky defense continued to stop the Hawks. Robinson's twisting 34-yard TD run and reserve QB Tim Cowan's three-yard bootleg into the end zone added two more scores, and put the game out of reach.

Robinson gained 142 yards on 20 carries in the game, and set up or scored three of the Huskies' four touchdowns, and was named Rose Bowl MVP of the game.

QB Gordy Bohannon struggled in his Pasadena homecoming. He was involved in 4 of Iowa's 5 turnovers. He completed only six of 14 passes and threw two interceptions. and fumbled the ball twice. On defense, Mel Cole was named the Hawkeyes' MVP with 12 tackles.
