Two first quarter interceptions helped Iowa jump to a 10-0 lead. But UCLA scored 17 unanswered to take a 17-10 halftime lead after forcing 2 Iowa turnovers. There were 5 turnovers in the first half. In the 3rd quarter, QB Brendan Sullivan was injured and was replaced by 5th string QB Jackson Stratton, a transfer from Colorado State. He led the Hawks down the field for a TD with two 3rd down pass completions. Kamari Moulton walked in for a 1-yard TD run to tie the game. Sullivan finished 6/9 for 157 yards, but threw two interceptions. Stratton finished 3/6 for 28 yards. Kaleb Johnson was held to 49 yards on 18 carries. Jacob Gill caught 8 passes for 138 yards with a long of 59 yards.

It was the first time Iowa has played UCLA since they joined the Big Ten. The last time they played each other was the 1986 Rose Bowl. The last Iowa win in the Rose Bowl was the 1959 Rose Bowl.
