RECAP

Iowa played its first complete game of the year with a dominant rushing attack, efficient quarterback play, tough defense and strong special teams performance, propelling them to a convincing 40-16 victory. It was the first time the teams have played since the 1995 Sun Bowl, with a similar outcome (38-18 win for Iowa).

On their first drive, Washington drove down the field, but the Iowa defense held, and blocked the short FG attempt. Iowa's 2nd possession started to show progress with the rushing attack, resulting in a 6-yard TD run by Kaleb Johnson. The Huskies responded with a long drive, and were able to get into the end zone. After a long punt by Rhys Dakin, the Iowa defense stepped up with a QB sack and forced fumble by Aaron Graves. The offense couldn't move the ball, and the Hawks settled for a 37-yard FG by Drew Stevens to take a 10-7 lead. After forcing a punt, Kaden Wetjen returned the punt for 37 yards, setting up an 18-yard TD pass from Cade McNamara to Johnson to take a 17-7 lead. The Huskies drove down with under 2 minutes in the half to add a FG, and Iowa responded with a long run by Johnson, setting up a 46-yard FG by Stevens. Both FGs went over the top of the uprights, but neither could be reviewed by the officials, and both were called good on the field. Iowa led 20-10 at halftime.

Jamari Harris got an interception the first drive of the 2nd half, returning the ball to midfield. Iowa had the ball on 1st down and goal, but were unable to get a touchdown, settling for a Stevens 25-yard FG. Johnson scored again on the first play of the 4th quarter from the 8-yard line for his 3 TD, giving Iowa a 30-10 lead. The Hawkeye defense stopped the Huskies on 4th and 4, and on the next play, McNamara hit Dayton Howard for his first college catch for a 33-yard TD, boosting the lead to 37-10. Stevens added a 51-yard FG after another 4th down stop by the Iowa defense.

Kaleb Johnson finished the day with 166 yards on 21 carries (7.9 yard average) and 3 TDs (2 rushing, 1 passing). Cade McNamara was 8 for 14 for 108 yards and 2 TDs. Iowa effectively converted in the red zone, scoring on five of their five opportunities. Stevens ended the game with 4 of 4 on FGs.

The Iowa defense sacked Washington four times for a total loss of 24 yards, including a fumble and recovery. Jay Higgins led the defense with 14 tackles.

The win was Kirk Ferentz' 200th win at Iowa, putting him in 2nd place all-time for Big Ten coaches, just 5 wins behind Ohio State's Woody Hayes.
