In Iowa's 2nd possession, they went for it on 4th down and 1 on the Troy 15-yard line but were stopped, and the 1st quarter ended scoreless. Iowa scored on a TD run by Kaleb Johnson. Troy responded with a long 63-yard TD pass to Devonte Ross to tie the game at 7. It was the 2nd long TD pass given up this season, which is unusual for the Iowa defense. With 1 minute left in the 1st half, Devonte Ross returned a low punt for a 77-yard TD for his 2nd TD, giving Troy a 14-10 lead into halftime. Iowa moved the ball early in the 2nd half to retake the lead on a 2-yard pass from Brendan Sullivan to Addison Ostrenga.

The Hawks added some breathing room with a 28-yard interception return from Jamari Harris to lead 24-14 late in the 3rd quarter.

Troy responded again with a long 62-yard TD pass to Devonte Ross for his 3rd TD of the day to close the gap to 24-21 to end the quarter. Iowa responded with a 33-yard TD run by Kaleb Johnson to lead 31-21. The Hawks put the game away with a long 39-yard TD run by Jaziun Patterson.

Johnson finished with 25 carries for 173 yards (7.7 average) and 2 TDs. His 479 rushing yards on the season are the most by a Hawkeye through the team's first three games of the season since Tavian Banks had 644 through three games in 1997. Patterson finished with 8 carries for a 9 yard rushing average. Cade McNamara finished 19/23 for 176 yards. Jay Higgins finished with 7 tackles, Ethan Hurkett got 2 sacks, and Brian Allen got 2.5 tackles for loss.

It was the first time Iowa has played a team from the state of Alabama in school history.
