After a Rhys Dakin punt was downed on the 1-yard line, the defense forced a punt, which setup a 27-yard TD run by Kaleb Johnson in the first quarter. An interception by Jay Higgins gave Iowa the ball on the 12-yard line, but with 1st down near the goal line, the Hawks could only get 3 points. Johnson had another long run to get the Hawks close to the end zone near halftime, but had to settle for another FG. After Iowa State missed a FG, Iowa held the lead 13-0 at halftime.

After the half, the Cyclones converted on their first two 3rd downs of the game, including a TD pass to make it 13-7. The Hawks responded with Johnson again, who had a 54-yard run, and finished the drive with a 6-yard TD run, but Iowa decided to go for 2 and failed, which would turn out to be costly. Iowa State responded on the next play with a 75-yard TD pass, making it 19-14. Johnson finished with 25 carries with 187 yards (7.5 yard average), with 2 TDs.

A 4th quarter FG by Iowa State made it 19-17. Iowa State got the ball back on the 22-yard line with 34 seconds left, and moved quickly down the field, setting up the game-winning 54-yard FG by Kyle Konrardy.

It is the 2nd straight win over Iowa in Kinnick.
