Both teams carne out aggressively in the first half, trading off control of the ball for the first 10 minutes of the game. But Iowa took advantage of the first penalty corner awarded in the game to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Liz Tchou took the corner hit from Deb Brickey and knocked the ball past Owl defenders into the lower right hand corner of the cage at 22:42. Mary Koboldt, who stopped the hit from Brickey received the assist. Temple tried to tie the game on three penalty corners but was unsuccessful. The Owls put the ball in the cage on their third try but the goal was disallowed because of ball movement by the stopper. With less than 10 minutes in the half, Marcia Pankratz slapped it into the net at 9:42, making the score 2-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Iowa's defenders took over and kept Temple from generating an attack. The Owls took six shots on goal but were unable to score. Iowa goalie Karen Napolitano had two crucial saves in the second half to preserve the shutout. Throughout the game the Hawkeyes beat Temple to the free hits which was a difference.
