In a rematch from earlier this season, when the Hawks prevailed 2-0, things didn't start out very good. The Spartans dominated the first 15 minutes of the game and had four penalty corners. But good defensive play by the Hawkeyes kept the game scoreless. Freshman Karen Napolitano was used as goalie instead of Joan Behrends, Iowa's starting goalie for the last two years.

Marcia Pankratz got the Hawkeyes on the board first at 26:29 with an assist by Deb Brickey and added a second goaI before halftime at 33:55 with an assist by RosAnna Salcido, giving Iowa a 2-0 lead at the half. After half, the Hawks continued to attack. Mary Koboldt knocked the ball In the goal at 5:45 with an assist by Salcido. Pankratz added a third goal at 11:27 and Liz Tchou slapped a fourth ball through the net to lead 4-0. Iowa had a 5-0 lead before the Spartans got on the scoreboard at 19:21 and 25:16. The Hawks had 19 shots on goal, compared to 10 for the Spartans.

Iowa advances to the Regional Finals to meet rival Northwestern. Northwestern won the first game this season, 2-1, in Evanston, and the two teams tied 2-2 in double overtime two weeks ago in Iowa City.
