Payton Sandfort accomplished something no other Iowa men's basketball player has ever done, recorded a triple-double. He led the Hawks with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He also scored most of his points at the free throw line, with an amazing 18-19 (94.7%). The points, assists, free throws attempted and free throws made are all career highs.

The Hawkeyes dominated the Nittany Lions in the opening minutes of the game, starting with a 16-4 run in the first 5-minutes of the game. The Hawkeyes led by as much as 17 points (29-12) before Penn State had an 8-0 run of their own. Penn State jumped out to 8-2 run in the opening three minutes of the second half, cutting the Iowa lead down to just two points, but Iowa bounced back, led by Sandfort.

Josh Dix also had a great night, and was a key spark for Iowa in the first half, scoring 18 points (but only 2 more points in the 2nd half). Patrick McCaffery also scored his 1000th career point as a Hawkeye. Owen Freeman scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds, shooting 5-of-9 (55.5%) from the field.
