The Hawkeyes' 20-7 mastery over #6 UCLA Saturday in Kinnick Stadium was just another example of playing the role of "giant killer." The Bruins were ranked No. 7 in the country going into the game, but will fall in the polls, just as Nebraska did after Iowa's season opener. The format was also similar to the Nebraska game, a lot of defense, ball control by the offense and an excellent kicking game. Tom Nichol kicked two field goals, and defensive lineman Mark Bortz recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown after a sack from Dave Browne and Andre Tippett. It was the 100th career win for Hayden Fry, who received the game ball. The fans were so excited during the game that the UI athletic department had to pay $15,000 to fix damage to the fiberglass bleachers. The win allowed the Hawks to enter the Top 20 AP and UPI rankings for the first time since the early 1960's.
