RECAP

Iowa defeats the defending national champion Penn State Nittany Lions to send them to their first ever 0-3 start under Paterno. Penn State started the season as the fourth-ranked team in the nation. It was the most points ever scored by a Penn State opponent in Happy Valley, and a Beaver Stadium record for combined yardage as both teams rolled up a devastating 1,089 yards total offense. Iowa racked up 587 yards in total offense, including a school record 345 yards passing by quarterback Chuck Long. Penn State added 492 yards to the offensive display.

One of the key plays was a 77-yard bomb from Long to wingback Ronnie Harmon, giving the Hawks a two touchdown lead with nine minutes to go in the game.
