RECAP

Iowa's first intercollegiate game resulted in a loss to Grinnell (called Iowa College at the time) on the road. It was also the first intercollegiate football game played west of the Mississippi River. With the help of Frank Everest and Lou Van Giesen, two men with playing experience back east, the Pioneers were able to field a competitive team and Iowa was completely outmatched. Iowa players arrived without proper uniforms and padding. They were also able to decode Iowa's simple verbal signals. There was also some confusion about the rules of the game, and what was legal or not.

Although a rematch was scheduled to be played on Thanksgiving, it was canceled due to inclement weather. With that, Iowa College had won the first championship west of the Mississippi River.
