Coach Bucky O’Connor was frustrated by the underperformance of his varsity squad. This team was struggling; full of overpraised upperclassmen who were wilting under pressure. Bucky had an idea. In order to send a message, he would sit his entire varsity squad and start the sophomores (which was at that time the first year of eligibity) against defending national champion Indiana, led by three time All-American Don Schlundt. It was crazy, but as gambles go, not that bad. The sophomores had been getting some favorable results against the varsity men in scrimmage all year. But did he expect them to actually compete? Let’s just say they don’t call it “sending a message” for nothing. But these were no ordinary sophomores and this was no ordinary message. Not only did they compete, but on that night in Bloomington, Indiana, five Iowa sophomores absolutely destroyed the finest team in the nation by a count of 82-64.
