On the bus ride down to play, the team mascot "Burch" (real-life black bear mascot used from 1908 to 1910) became unruly and hard to manage, and forced the entire team into one small corner of the bus. The bear had officially become "too big to be manageable."

In the game, the Hawks fell behind 8-0 at halftime after a fumbled punt that gave Missouri the ball on Iowa's 5-yard line, which was converted into a touchdown. They also added a field goal. Iowa was not able to take advantage of many fumbles by the Tigers (5 fumbles recovered by Iowa, 2 recovered by Missouri). Wind also played a major factor in the game, and 3 field goal attempts were missed by Iowa going into the wind.

The Hawkeyes were able to put together two good scoring drives in the second half. However, they couldn't keep the Tigers out of the end zone, giving up a long 45-yard TD run. James Murphy scored 2 TDs to cut the deficit to 13-12. but it wasn't enough to pull out the victory. Both teams rushed for over 200 yards.
