RECAP

The Hawkeyes drove 90 yards for a touchdown on their second possession of the day and never trailed. Ladell Betts scored on runs of one and two yards and Kahlil Hill had a seven-yard scoring reception from Kyle McCann as Iowa built a 21-5 halftime advantage. After Penn State closed to within 21-11 in the third quarter, Iowa’s Nate Kaeding added a 47-yard field goal for Iowa’s final points. Penn State scored on a blocked punt to move within 24-18 with just under four minutes to play, but Iowa recovered the onside kick and kept the ball the remainder of the game. Betts ended the day with 95 rushing yards and McCann completed 16-25 passes for 225 yards. TE Dallas Clark had seven receptions for 106 yards and Hill had six catches for 83 yards and 212 all-purpose yards.

The Iowa defense was strong throughout. Iowa's defense held Penn State to 33 rushing yards and 194 yards total offense. Other than one 90-yard scoring drive, Penn State had just one other possession that covered more than 30 yards. The Nittany Lions scored on a safety and a blocked punt and their field goal came after recovering an Iowa fumble at the 20-yardline. LB Fred Barr led Iowa with 13 tackles, while LB Roger Meyer had 12 and DB Bob Sanders had 11. DT Aaron Kampman had 10 tackles and DB Matt Stockdale had seven tackles and four pass break-ups.

Iowa starts the season 3-0 for the first time since 1997.
