Iowa's Kevin Boyle scored 21 points as replacement for the injured Ronnie Lester, and hit 2 free throws with 30 seconds left to put Iowa up 72-69, and the Hawks defended three attempts by Illinois to win the game. Eddie Johnson hit clutch shots for the Illini to make it close, and ended with 22 points. Mark Gannon added 13 points for the Hawks, who moved to 10-0, and won an important conference opener on the road.
