Three freshmen accounted for five touchdowns as Iowa opened the season with a 38-0 win over Central Michigan. Redshirt freshman Kahlil Hill scored on a 62-yard punt return and an 88-yard kickoff return, making him the only Hawkeye ever to score on punt and kickoff returns in the same game. Ladell Betts, another redshirt freshman, scored on runs of 23 and 40 yards and Chris Oliver, a true freshman playing his first college game, scored on a 22-yard pass from redshirt freshman QB Kyle McCann. Iowa led 7-0 at halftime before Hill returned the second half kickoff for a score. Zach Bromert was 5-5 in PATs and added a 33-yard field goal. McCann sparked the Iowa offense in the second half, completing five of seven passes for 148 yards and a touchdown. Betts led the Iowa rushing game with 64 yards on nine carries while receiver Ryan Barton had four catches for 128 yards. The Hawkeye defense held Central Michigan to just 35 yards rushing and 227 yards total offense. LB Travis Senters led Iowa tacklers with 10 and DB Tarig Holman had eight solo tackles and three pass break-ups.
