An incredible defensive effort by Arizona State picked apart Iowa's ninth ranked offense. The Sun Devils dominated the running game, rushing for 268 net yards, while Iowa barely broke ground with only 19 total rushing yards. The Sun Devil defensive line also compiled six sacks for a total loss of 39 yards.

The powerful Iowa offense managed just one score, a 26-yard touchdown pass with only 49 seconds remaining in the game, when Randy Reiners found Ricchard Carter. The Sun Devil defense stopped the Hawkeyes on fourth down attempts on three consecutive series in the second half, including two times when the chains came out for measurement. RB Tavian Banks sparked the offense unit on Iowa's second possession, but ASU held the nation's fourth-best rusher to only 52 yards in the game. The Sun Devils recovered an Iowa fumble late in the first half and added a field goal for a 10-0 halftime advantage, after missing a short FG earlier in the game. QB Matt Sherman started the game in his return from a severe thumb injury, but struggled against the ASU defense, and rotated in with Reiners throughout the game. Jason Baker averaged 49 yards per punt with a long of 76 yards.
