In the 1st round of the 1999 NCAA Tournament, #5 seed Iowa faced off with #12 seed University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). The Hawks were hot from 3-point range, hitting 12 of 23 from 7 different players, and were 8 of 10 early in the game. At halftime, Iowa had already broken the school record for 3-pointers in an NCAA tournament game (12). The previous mark was nine, set in 1989 against Rutgers.

Dean Oliver battled the flu. He played only 8 minutes in the first half, but finished with 19 minutes, 15 points, six assists, two steals and two rebounds.

With the win, coach Tom Davis extended his 1st round tournament winning streak to 11-0.
