Expectations were high with College Game Day in attendance, but the Hawks got down quickly 31-6 at halftime and 38-6 early in the 3rd quarter due to 3 interceptions, one fumble, and one blocked punt for a TD. Later in the 3rd quarter, they finally got into the end zone on a 19-yard reverse run by Tim Dwight. That propelled a series of exciting punt returns from Dwight, including a 86-yard TD, and he nearly duplicated the feat on the next punt return as he single-handedly tried to get the Hawkeyes back in the game. He had 199 all-purpose yards, but the 20 point second half wasn't enough. Dwight's 1996 return yardage of 394 broke Nile Kinnick's school record of 322, set in 1937. On defense, Damien Robinson paced the Hawkeyes with eight tackles.
