Hawkeye Nation - Iowa vs Iowa State 2013 Postgame Notes

9/15/2013 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation

The Iowa football team defeated Iowa State, 27-21, tonight inside Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa has defeated Iowa State in four of the last six meeting and leads the all-time series 40-21.

The victory was No. 600 in program history. The Hawkeyes’ overall record is 600-531-39 (.529).

Iowa leads the 2013 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, 5-0. Today was the second event in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series. The Hawkeyes earned three points for the football victory, and two points for a victory in women’s soccer on Sept. 6 in Iowa City.

Iowa owned a 2-1 advantage in turnover margin. The Hawkeyes lost one fumble, but recorded two interceptions -- one each from James Morris and B.J. Lowery. Iowa is 2-1 this season when winning the turnover margin.

The Iowa defense allowed just 61 yards total offense in the first half, limiting Iowa State to four first downs.

The Hawkeyes scored three times in the second quarter, outscoring Iowa State 13-0. The Hawkeyes have outscored their opponents 30-7 in the second quarter this season.

QB Jake Rudock rushed for a one-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. It was Rudock’s fourth rushing touchdown of the season, and it marked the first time under head coach Kirk Ferentz an Iowa quarterback has rushed for a touchdown in three consecutive games. Rudock rushed eight times for 10 yards against the Cyclones. On the season, he has 19 rushing attempts for 71 yards and four touchdowns.

RB Mark Weisman rushed for more than 100 yards for the third straight contest. He finished the game with a career-high 35 carries for 145 yards. He is the first Iowa running back since Shonn Green (2008) to rush for 100 or more yards in the first three games of the season. Weisman has seven career 100-yard rushing games.

WR Kevonte Martin-Manley caught seven passes for 60 yards. He now has 101 career receptions and 1,057 career receiving yards. He is the 20th Iowa player in program history with at least 100 career receptions and the 36th Hawkeye to surpass 1,000 career receiving yards.

DL Darian Cooper recorded his first career sack in the first quarter. Cooper dropped Iowa State quarterback Sam Richardson for a nine-yard loss to thwart a Cyclone drive.

WR Tevaun Smith and WR Jacob Hillyer both recorded career long receptions. Smith’s 25-yard reception on Iowa’s first scoring drive was the longest reception of his career. Hillyer’s 26-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter was his first career touchdown reception, and the longest reception of his career.

Iowa put together its two longest scoring drives of the season today. Iowa’s second quarter scoring drive that resulted in a 27-yard field goal was at the time Iowa’s longest scoring drive of the year in terms of plays (15) time of possession (7:12). Iowa’s fourth quarter scoring drive (Rudock 1-yard rushing touchdown) matched the longest of the season in terms of plays (15), and was the longest in time of possession (7:44).

TE Ray Hamilton caught a career-high two passes for a career-best 34 yards. His 21-yard reception in the third quarter was a career-long.

LB James Morris’ interception in the second quarter was his third career interception. Morris returned the interception 27 yards to set up a 38-yard field goal by K Mike Meyer, extending Iowa’s lead to 13-0. Morris also intercepted a pass against Iowa State last season. Morris averages 42.7 return yards on three career interceptions.

TE C.J. Fiedorowicz and WR Kevonte Martin-Manley each extended their streak of consecutive games with a reception to 21.

PK Mike Meyer has made a school-record 91 consecutive PAT attempts, the eighth longest streak in Big Ten Conference history. That active streak ranks third in the nation (Baylor’s Aaron Jones, 116; Northwestern’s Jeff Budzien 106). Meyer’s last PAT miss was in a 37-6 win over Michigan State on Oct. 30, 2010, in Iowa City. As a team, Iowa has gone 32 consecutive games without a missed or blocked PAT.

K Mike Meyer was perfect in three extra point attempts and two field goal attempts. He ranks fourth all-time in career field goals (49) and fifth all-time in career scoring (257 points). He trails Kyle Schlicher in career field goals (51) and scoring (260).

Instant replay was used two times time today. Officials overruled Mark Weisman’s two-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Instant replay determined Weisman was down at the one-foot line. Jake Rudock scored on Iowa’s next play. Officials reviewed the spot of an ISU reception in the fourth quarter. The call on the field was upheld.

Iowa State won the toss and elected to receive. Iowa has started the game on defense in 33-of-177 games under Kirk Ferentz. The Hawkeyes are 18-15 in those games.

Iowa returns home Saturday, Sept. 21, hosting Western Michigan at 11 a.m. inside Kinnick Stadium. The game will be televised by BTN.
