Hawkeye Nation - 2002 Interview with Tim Dwight

Hawkeye Nation - 2002 Interview with Tim Dwight

1/15/2002 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation

Tim Dwight has made millions during his four-year NFL career, but it was easy to tell during our interview that money has not changed Dwight one bit. He is still as daring and passionate about life and football as he always was. And he is still passionate about the past, present and future of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Iowa Men’s Basketball team is limping through a disappointing season this year, but Dwight’s senior season in 1997 was also considered a big disappointment. The 1997 Hawkeyes were ranked in the top 10 at one point before losing back-to-back games against Ohio State and Michigan. Dwight still remembers it well.

“I actually visited Pasadena about a month ago,” said Dwight. “I was driving my car and drove past the Rose Bowl thinking ‘This is where I wanted to be for four damn years and I never made it’. It was such a delight to see the stadium.”

”I would love to go back in time and do things differently and make certain plays. But adversity sets you up for the tougher things in life. You have to look at your disappointments as stepping-stones for better times.”

Which is what Dwight has always done with adversity. He has bottled up the feelings of frustration and pain and turned them into successes down the road. But Dwight doesn’t think he is the only one that still feels the pain from 1997.

”Yeah, I am sure that Tavian, Goff, Knipper, Sherman and Burger and all those guys would want to get that season back and play it again.” Dwight said.

”We had a hell of a year before that. We had a hell of a football team that year I was a junior. I think we were easily the best team not playing on New Year’s Day. If we would have beat (expletive deleted) Tulsa down there we would have been playing on New Years Day, pardon my French,” said Dwight, speaking of the 9-3 1996 Hawkeyes.

Back to his senior year of 1997.

“You always want to go out on a good note. It was a big disappointment losing five games. And it was disappointing going back to the Sun Bowl, where we had just been two years before and had been to Texas the year before at the Alamo Bowl.” Dwight said.

“The next step was getting to the New Year’s Day bowl. It just didn’t work out that way.”

”But you always sit back and think that it was your senior year and it should have been different,” said Dwight, who was again conjuring up the pain of missed opportunity. “7-5, I mean….Losing to Michigan, the number one team who went on to win the National title, having them down 21-7 at the half and losing that game; it was real disappointing.”

”But, that is the way life is. The guys and me will meet up somewhere down the road and chat about all of that and laugh about some things, and be pissed off here and there, too.” Dwight said. “I would never take back those years with those guys for anything, though.”

It was clear to see that the black and gold still flows through Dwight’s veins when talking about the teams he was a part of, but we wanted to know if Dwight still follows the Hawks from afar?

“HECK YES I DO!” Dwight exclaimed, as if I had asked him a stupid question (which in hindsight might be accurate). “I was so pissed off at the Michigan game. I was pissed about the Wisconsin and we should have beaten Michigan State.”

”The Banks kid is good,” said Dwight, speaking of quarterback Brad Banks. “I saw him against Michigan; you still keep him in that game I think. We were scoring points and moving the football. I know he made the one mistake running out of bounds before the sticks. But he makes plays. He makes watching the game exciting. That was one of the most frustrating parts for me, because I was watching that whole game.”

”I was like ‘dang it Kirk don’t take him out!’. The kid was running around, throwing the ball, making plays. Michigan had been preparing for (Kyle) McCann all week and then they see Banks. They were not practicing for containment; they were practicing on sacking McCann, because he did not have the mobility of Banks. But you put in this Banks kid and he can run, well shoot, now their game plan they have been practicing all week goes out the window. “

Dwight continued.

”But Michigan made two huge plays, the one in the end zone and the long pass over (Chigozie) Ejiasi. But, that is what the great Michigan teams do. You let them hang around like we did in 1997 and they will find a way to beat you.” “We were probably a 6-5 team, but there are a couple games in there that you can always win. We had a chance to win two or three of those games.”

Clearly, Dwight is still passionate about the Hawks and he was on a roll.

”Then we play Iowa State. We score 90 points in the last two weeks before that game and we play Iowa State in the make up game and only muster up 14 points. I know that Bobby Elliot is there at Iowa State and he is a hell of a coach and knows what we were trying to do and everything.”

”The season was frustrating at times, but I thought the kids stepped up and played well.”

Dwight is also optimistic about future Iowa teams as well as being a big fan of Norm Parker.

”We have a hell of a defensive coordinator. He did not stunt at all this year and our front four basically made all of the plays.” Dwight said.

”And that darn safety, (Bob) Sanders I think his name is, he is going to be a hell of a player. He is all ‘want to’; he just lays it out there and sets a good example for those young players. I think there are a lot of exciting things going for Iowa football down the road.”

”For next year, they lose some key players but defensively, I think we need one more corner and some guys to fill in at Linebacker. I am concerned about quarterback as well.”

Even though he is a millionaire and has scored points in a Super Bowl, Tim Dwight is still just like the rest of us. He is a Hawkeye fan at heart and still has a passion for the Hawkeyes. Dwight followed Iowa’s fortunes all the way to Texas.

”I was stoked about them winning the Alamo Bowl. They came in against Texas Tech, AGAIN, a team that throws the ball and puts a lot of points on the board and we basically shut everything down. I think San Antonio is a good town for us.”

NFL Free Agency

As a player, you want to have control over where you are going to be the last four or five years of your career. I have not had that chance, so I am embracing it. But at the same time, it is a decision that will have to last your for five years.

You have to ask yourself how much money do you want? Do you want to go to one team over another because they are paying you more or will I fit into another team’s system better and have a better chance? So there are a lot of things that you have to look at. It is fun to have that type of freedom, but at the same time, it’s very stressful.

Because I am the type of player who wants to win. I want to be used where I am playing and I want to be a part of it all. I don’t care how much money I am making, I want to play football and line up against the best in the world and get the most out of my body and my talent.

Atlanta, I was used off and on and had to step in and start a few times and there were times where I came in off of the bench and made plays. But there were time’s when I would sit back and look at it all and say “Hey, I am making some big plays here. Why the hell don’t we do more three wide receiver sets to capitalize on that?”. But every coach has their own philosophy and how they want to run a ballgame.

You go out there and try to win, but the coaches don’t always put you in a position to do that and you get very frustrated.

It was frustrating. The biggest thing with me is my size. They are always going to question my durability. I had something go wrong every year I have been in the league. My rookie year it was my MCL, and you know, it’s not like I have had minor injuries, they have been pretty major. It’s due to being tackled certain ways and then this year, it was a freak thing to where I was hit and it fractured a rib and punctured a lung that collapsed (against Kansas City). I think that my size is in the back of coaches minds that I might get beat down, so they might not choose to make me a point of emphasis as a player.

But when I get in there, I do all kinds of different things for the team, like running the ball, catching passes, returning kicks, so I sit back and say ‘Shoot, this is what I have done, I have competed and compared to a lot of other receivers, I have won more battles in certain categories. You wonder going into the following year just what they are going to do with you. You never know, they are always looking for that next player to step up and you don’t know if it will be your position or not.

The second year, starting eight games and sitting out two of the last four, but having a career night the last game of the year on Monday Night Football against San Francisco, you think going into next year things might be different. But the Falcons picked up Shawn Jefferson and signed him to a deal, and you just say “screw it”. There is nothing you can do now except bitch and moan. Be a team player and go out on the field and make plays and that was something that I did. I think that was why I was traded. The trade was big for me because I felt like I went to a team who actually wanted my services. Wanted to put me on the field and make plays for them. I did that on third downs last year and that is something that I wanted to do going into a new team. I wanted to find my spot, and help the team win and that is what I tried to do.

The whole trade things was quite interesting, the feelings going through it all. Part of me was like “Those sons a bitches!”, but then that quickly faded to, “We are going to have a good football team.” We started off great, but right in the middle of the season, we lost about three good players and then we all came back, but we just couldn’t win the close ball games and make the plays in the 4th quarter.

I am free as a bird on March 1st. I will have the say in where I want to go. We went to the Chargers and sent a deal in, and they countered with something we didn’t feel as acceptable. Obviosuly they are not going to come right back and give away the farm, they have some time right now to maybe make me sweat it a little bit. But I am not sweating it at all. I am not really worried about it, because I think things happen for reasons. And I have a choice of the place that I would like to go and there are obviously some teams out there that can use my services.

These next two weeks, the pressure is on them. They know what I have done for them and they know what I can do. The nice thing about San Diego is that you have (Doug) Flutie maybe one or two more years, but Drew Brees is the future. You have LaDainian Tomlinson. The second reciver spot is open right now. I know that a new offensive coordinator coming in, that means that anyone going in there, it’s a free game. It is not like I will have an advantage over someone. Other guys will have as much chance as I do to make the number two spot because it’s a brand new offense.

It could be my last free agent contract, too, but hopefully not. The statistics are against me, going into my fifth year. The average player plays 3.8 years, so I have made that. But I think my best football is ahead of me. I think I saw that this year. Going into camp this year, I was the least prepared, physically, as I have ever been, due to repairing my knee injury on May 1st. I sat for a month and a half, so I didn’t have any base to come off of. But I went in and played well and I played well. Not because I was physically ready, but mentally, you get to the point where you say ‘I have seen this coverage before’ or ‘I have played against this caliber of individual before’ and you know that you can compete. You know what works, you think a lot more as you do when you are younger, you are more calm about the game and you go out there and just play.

You don’t worry about dropping balls or running the wrong routes because you have been there before. I think my best football is definitely ahead of me if I can keep my health up, and that is something that this offseason I am really taking to heart. I am getting back into the weight room to put some weight back on and do some things that I really haven’t done over the past couple of years.

Teams

You look at St Louis, and it is a no-brainer. They run a lot of three wide receiver sets. I know that have (Torry) Holt and I know they have (Isaac) Bruce, but you can catch a lot of balls there as a third wide receiver. They have the MVP of the league throwing the ball to you and they have Marshall Faulk. That guys is going to play until he wants to stop playing. The system that they run is fun. I don’t know of Az (Hakim) is going to come back as their punt returner. That is something that they took him off of the second half of the season. They know what I can do. I played against them for three years and made some big plays on them.

Kansas City is another one. They have a good quarterback, not nearly as good as Warner, but they have a good running back there now. They have some open spots at wide receiver, so that is something that is enticing too. Casey Wiegman is down there, so there is another Iowa guy that I am good friends with. So there are a lot of plusses about Kansas City.

You look at KC and you look at St Louis and its like, ‘heck, what do you do?’ I think KC is going to turn into a Rams system.

There are also plusses about Miami with Norv (Turner) being there. So there are quite a few teams that I have some history with, who know what I am capable of doing. I feel very positive about a lot of teams. If San Diego comes to me and if the money is right, that might be the way I go as well. I am just waiting to sit back and watch where the cards fall and having a game plan of if San Diego doesn’t bring anything attractive to the table, who is the best team for me and that will allow me to play the football that I want to play.

Looking back on my senior year, I wanted to go out with a bang. I actually visited Pasadena about a month ago. I was driving my car and drove past the stadium thinking ‘This is where I wanted to be for four damn years and I never made it.’. It was such a delight to see the stadium. I would love to go back in time and do things differently and make certain plays. But it sets you up for the tougher things in life. You have to look at your disappointments as stepping stones for better times.

Yeah, I'm sure Tavian, Goff, Knipper, Sherman and Berger and all those guys would want to get that season back and play it again. We had a hell of a year before that. We had a hell of a football team that year I was a junior. I think we were easily the best team not playing on New Year’s day. If we would have beat (expletive deleted) Tulsa down there we would have been playing on New Years day, pardon my French. But you always want to go out on a good note. It was a big disappointment losing five games. And going back to the Sun Bowl, where we had just been two years before and had been to Texas the year before at the Alamo Bowl. The next step was getting to the New Year’s Day bowl to play against an SEC team or a PAC-10 team. We ended up playing a PAC-10 team and they did some good things against us.

But you always sit back and think that it was your senior year, 7-5, I mean….losing to Michigan, the number one team who went on to win the National title, having them down 21-7 at the half and losing that game, then going to Ohio State and losing that game, which was real disappointing. That is the way life is. Me and the guys will meeet up somewhere down the road and chat about all of that and laugh about some things, and be pissed off here and there, too. I was stoked about them winning the Alamo Bowl. They came in against Texas Tech, AGAIN, a team that throws the ball and puts a lot of points on the board and we basically shut everything down. I think San Antonio is a good town for us.

I don’t want to go back inside on that Damn turf.

Tim Dwight is not concerned about where he will be playing football next year. He is not ‘sweating’ the details, as he has come to a point in his career where he is comfortable with the body of work he has turned in and he has come to a point where minor mistakes do not affect him. Clearly, he is a league veteran.

As Dwight told us yesterday, he is ‘free as a bird’ on March 1st, the first day he will be a free agent.

What teams are in the hunt for his services?

”You look at St Louis, and having an interest in them is a no-brainer. They run a lot of three wide receiver sets.” Dwight said. “I know that have (Tory) Holt and I know they have (Isaac) Bruce, but you can catch a lot of balls there as a third wide receiver. They have the MVP of the league throwing the ball to you and they have Marshall Faulk. That guys is going to play until he wants to stop playing.”

”The system they run is fun. I don’t know of Az (Hakim) is going to come back as their punt returner. That is something that they took him off of the second half of the season. They know what I can do. I played against them for three years (in Atlanta) and made some big plays on them.”

Dwight also has interest in another team just down the road on Interstate 70.

”Kansas City is another team that I like. They have a good quarterback, not nearly as good as Warner, but they have a good running back there now, too.” Dwight said, referring to Chiefs quarterback Trent Green and running back Priest Holmes.

”They have some open spots at wide receiver, so that is something that is enticing too. Casey Wiegmann is down there, so there is another Iowa guy that I am a good friend with. So there are a lot of plusses about Kansas City.”

”Really, when looking at KC and St Louis and its like, ‘heck, what do you do?’ I think KC is going to turn into a Rams system.”

Dwight is certainly a big fan of a warm climate and he takes advantage of San Diego’s picture perfect weather. That is why another team he mentioned might be a good fit for him, in addition to some good football people being in place.

”There are also plusses about Miami with Norv (Turner) being there.” Dwight said.

”So there are quite a few teams that I have some history with, who know what I am capable of doing. I feel very positive about a lot of teams.”

But make no mistake about it, the Chargers are very much in the ‘Dwight Sweepstakes’.

”If San Diego comes to me and if the money is right, that might be the way I go as well. I am just waiting to sit back and watch where the cards fall and having a game plan of if San Diego doesn’t bring anything attractive to the table, who is the best team for me and which team will allow me to play the football that I want to play.”

Clearly, Dwight is going to take advantage of his opportunity as a free agent.

”As a player, you want to have control over where you are going to be the last four or five years of your career. I have not had that chance, so I am embracing it. But at the same time, it is a decision that will have to last your for five years.” Dwight said.

There are a lot of factors that go into this type of decision, as Dwight explains.

”You have to ask yourself how much money do you want? Do you want to go to one team over another because they are paying you more or will I fit into another team’s system better and have a better chance? So there are a lot of things that you have to look at. It is fun to have that type of freedom, but at the same time, it’s very stressful.”

And why is being a free agent stressful for Dwight?

”Because I am the type of player who wants to win. I want to be used where I am playing and I want to be a part of it all.” Dwight said.

”I don’t care how much money I am making, I want to play football and line up against the best in the world and get the most out of my body and my talent.”

Update: Dwight signed with the Chargers in March 2002.
