Hawkeye Nation - Good, Bad and Ugly: PSU - DRAFT 9/30/2001 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation   The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: PSU The Good: A Big Ten win against a foe with a lot of talent and lot on the line. A win after a three week lay-off! A win on a day when we did not play our best. The defense! Derrick Pickens, Aaron Kampman, Roger Meyer, Benny Sapp and Bob Sanders. Matt Stockdale had his best game in an Iowa uniform, in my opinion. Shane Hall filled in well for Chris Smith. Fred Barr was excellent against PSU. The play of Kyle McCann, Dallas Clark and Kahlil Hill was outstanding. The reads by McCann. He often saw when Clark was getting LB coverage and made the audible. This is a mismatch that teams will have to avoid. And by putting a safety on Clark, they become vulnerable to the deep route. The good and the beautiful- the dance squad stopping by at the Hawkeye Homebrew tailgater, to cheer up a bunch of "old guys"! Thanks, girls! The Bad: We were not nearly as sharp today as we have been in the first two games (of course, the opponent was better). Injuries: We need to get guys healthy to win games against tougher opponents. We need Betts, Cunningham and Steinbach at 100% and Lightfoot and Smith back in the lineup. Backup depth at CB. We still have problems if Stockdale and Sapp go out. We really need someone to step up behind the starters. The only defensive weakness I see is the pass rush- against a beat up PSU line, we needed to put more pressure on the QB! The Ugly: Special teams! A 12-point swing in score is directly attributed to special team miscues (blocked punt, muffed snap for a safety and a blocked FG). We certainly need to work on long snaps, blocking for the punter and getting our punts off quicker (that is about everything). Penalties! Too many penalties and some were just stupid.
