Mo Brown Ready to Go

Mo Brown Ready to Go

8/9/2002 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation

Every Iowa football fan with a pulse realizes that the wide receiving corps is a question mark for the 2002 Hawkeye football season.

CJ Jones returns as the only experienced receiver, but there are those who run in Hawkeye circles that feel the cupboard, though green, is not bare.

Iowa fans were given a nice preview at the 2002 Spring game as red-shirt freshman Ed Hinkel caught six passes for 183 yards. One of those catches was a 56-yard touchdown reception.

Mo Brown, always an imposing and impressive physical specimen, seems to have his head on straight and is out of Kirk Ferentz’ doghouse and ready to make an impact.

”I feel that I am prepared and that we are prepared as a team to get this season started,” Brown recently told HN.com.

”Some things have not worked out for me in the past, but I am ready to roll now. Everything bad is behind me and I am excited about the opportunity that I have.”

”My physical abilities have always been there, but I just had to get right with things mentally. I feel I am there.”

The Ft. Lauderdale, Florida native was an honorable mention all-state performer in high school but has yet to live up to the hype on the field, due in large part to off the field problems. One of those problems came last fall when Brown was arrested for OWI and subsequently missed the final six games of the 2001 season.

He also pleaded guilty to charges of simple assault in January of 2001 in connection to a June 30, 2000 altercation in Iowa City.

But Brown is ready to focus on two things during his final two years in Iowa City: academics and football.

”My goal is to play with intensity and the rest will take care of itself. We should throw the ball deep more this year, but that is up to the coaches.” Brown said.

Iowa quarterback Brad Banks will be the full-time starter in 2002 and Brown feels he is up the task.

”We know Brad can get the job done and we had the confidence in him last year as well as now.” Brown said.

A quick stroll through a local magazine stand reveals what the national experts think of the Hawkeyes.

We feel the low rankings are a challenge for us, and we have to go out and earn our respect and prove to everyone out there that we are for real.
