Inside the Numbers Akron

Inside the Numbers Akron

9/2/2002 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation

HN.com’s ‘Inside the Numbers’ feature is back for another season and there were a lot of numbers put up by the Hawkeyes against Akron on Saturday.

37

as in 37 points in the first quarter. No Iowa Hawkeye team has ever scored more points in any quarter. Ever. The 1990 Rose Bowl team put 35 on the board in one quarter against Illinois. The new record should stand up for a long time due to the safety that Akron incurred when a snap sailed over their punter’s head and he took the ball out of the end zone.

Five touchdowns in one quarter is about as good as you can conceive, so the safety may make this record next to impossible to top. Iowa also scored 23 points in the first 6:50 of the game.

44, 72, 25, 56 & 36

Those were the yards on each of Iowa’s five first quarter touchdowns. At least through one game, this looks to be a team capable of making the big plays. Let’s revisit this topic again next week.

30 games in a row:

That is the number of consecutive games that Iowa has started out on offense. It is a totally meaningless stat, outside of Kirk Ferentz’ desire to start the game on offense.

72 yards:

Kevin Worthy’s 72-yard fumble recovery turned touchdown is the 2 nd longest such play in Iowa history. The record is an 84-yard return by Dayton Perry in against Purdue in 1960.

46 straight PAT’s:

Nate Kaeding broke Rob Houghtlin’s record of 42 consecutive PAT’s early in the game and now has made 46 in a row. Kaeding has made 76 of 77 of his PAT’s attempts during his Iowa career, his only miss coming against Miami (OH) last year. He has also made 28 of 40 field goals, putting him more than halfway home of Houghtlin’s record of 54 field goals over an Iowa career.

;51,495

was the announced attendance. It sure seemed like there were closer to 60,000 fans there, but you know they would not ‘undersell’ the attendance figure. Playing a home game over Labor Day weekend is not the best idea and the Hawkeyes played before roughly 72% of capacity.

32:

The number of total yards that Miami (OH) managed against the Hawkeyes in the first half of their 2001 meeting. They also had just 15 plays and their first three drives resulted in three plays and a punt. The Redhawks managed just 64 yards up until 7:50 to go in the third quarter. But Iowa does not have Kampman, Montgomery and Pickens on the line this year, nor do they have Stockdale or Sapp at the corners.

37:

No Hawkeye ran for more than 37 yards against Miami last year. Ladell Betts had that many yards on 10 carries and Iowa finished the game with just 141 net rushing yards against the Redhawks, a team that returns 6 of their top 8 defensive lineman as well as having possibly the best linebacking corps in the MAC. Miami also held North Carolina to less than 100 yards this past Saturday in their win against the Tar Heels.

379:

That is how many rushing yards Iowa had against Akron. Will the Hawks try to run the ball against Miami? Uh, yeah. I also suspect Miami to stack the line with 8 defenders and blitz and stunt all day long, forcing Iowa to beat them through the air.

270:

The number of passing yards that Iowa had against Miami in 2001. Miami lost two starters (FS and CB) from last year’s squad. I think the Hawkeyes will approach those passing statistics in Oxford this Saturday, but what remains to be seen is if that will be a good thing. Miami surrendered nearly 400 yards passing to UNC on Saturday.

296:

The number of passing yards that Akron had against Iowa, including 256 in the first half. Miami QB Ben Roethlisberger is among the best in the nation and the Redhawks have 5 of their top 6 WR’s back from last season. Iowa used bland coverage schemes against Akron and rarely used their nickel packages. When they did use the nickel, true freshman Jovon Johnson was the man and did pretty well for his first collegiate game. Look for more of Johnson against Miami and more nickel packages.

9:

The number of North Carolina turnovers in their loss to Miami last week in Chapel Hill during a rainstorm. They actually had 7 fumbles, but recovered 1 of them to go along with their 3 INT’s. Maimi was +7 in the turnover battle.
