Good, Bad, and Ugly: Utah State

Good, Bad, and Ugly: Utah State

9/22/2002 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation

The Good:

It is nice to get a win without a great game by Brad Banks or the OL.

It was great to see some diversity on offense. We used shotgun formations, split and I-back formations, 3 and 4 WR sets, no TE, two TE’s, etc. We passed a lot on first down. We got Dallas Clark involved in a big way on Saturday.

Saturday was a big day for Jermelle Lewis. The first game where he was “the man”, Jermelle ran tough and made the big play. When Greving gets healthy, we will have three tailbacks and each one can get it done in the Big Ten.

Our WR’s were very good. A couple tough catches by Clinton Solomon (correction: one amazing catch by Solomon) and a tough grab by Ed Hinkel suggests that this group is improving every week.

Iowa was 12/19 in third down conversions!

The defense played real well. We put better pressure on the QB and I think I feel better about the pass-coverage ability of our LB’s and DB’s after this game. We are not yet “outstanding” on defense, but except for the first drive of the third quarter versus ISU, I think our defense has played well the last two weeks. Getting a defensive TD was great!

The Kicking game continues to be above average- very good!

This Saturday we have a chance to make a national statement about where this team is going!

The Bad:

I would still like to see Kinnick Stadium full every week- 54,000 is a nice crowd, but Hawk fans can do better! Should we expect excellence from the team if the fans aren’t producing the same? Let’s make sure the seats are filled for the remaining 4 games.

The Ugly:

George Lewis suffered a knee injury, which will cost him the season. Good luck with your recovery, George and we look forward to seeing you back in the Black and Gold next year.

A loss to ISU (okay that was last week, but it is still Ugly)
