Good, Bad, and Ugly: Miami (OH)

Good, Bad, and Ugly: Miami (OH)

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Week 2, Miami, Ohio

The Good

A road win versus a solid opponent is always welcome! That is two road wins in a row against good opponents, Texas Tech and now Miami OH.

Another good set of decisions by Brad Banks: He hasn’t used his legs much yet to gain yards, but has used his legs to escape potential losses. The arm strength gives us a weapon we didn’t have with McCann and he seems to be making the right calls. Banks had two nice dumps-off passes after he recognized the Miami blitz (one to Hinkel, the other to Clark). This really underscores his development in reading defenses.

The defensive line: Immediately after the game, I was pretty upset that the DL hadn’t held its own…but after watching the tape, I amend my opinion. The DL played pretty well on Saturday. Our ends stayed home well, sometime at the expense of pressure and our DTs got a step on most plays and stacked the middle. 17 rushes for 37 yds (14 if you subtract the QB losses), 4 sacks and about 12 QB hurries. On one series in the third quarter, we got pressure or sacks on 4 consecutive plays (a first down was awarded on a late hit). I think people forget that we have played two consecutive games against teams that run the spread offense and that offense is not on to make a DL look good.

Norm Parker called a solid defensive game. We used soft coverage, zone, a multiple blitz package (we blitzed the FS, the SS, all three LB’s and the CB in this game), the nickel and straight 4-3 defense. Did we show too much? The CB blitz was particularly effective.

Our WR’s, much talked about this spring and summer as a weak position, are quickly becoming a strong-point of this team. Mo Brown has been nothing short of sensational, Solomon is a surprise and Hinkel does everything well (as a WR!). Teams are putting a safety or double coverage on Clark, allowing us to make plays outside.

Nate Kaeding (no explanation required)!

David Bradley (no explanation required)!

The Bad:

We had too many penalties in this game. I forgive a couple of the pass interference calls (two were on plays where we got beat…so 10 yards beats the hell out of 6 points), but we have to avoid getting beat.

I think our DB’s still need to show improvement. They played the game very well in the soft zone, and allowed only one play over 25 yards, but we have some work on defenses where we need tight man-to-man. Still, I like the potential of this group and I think we will see more and more of Jovon Johnson at both CB spots.

Our special teams play was outstanding…however, we cannot keep giving our opponent 6 on punt return fumbles.

The Ugly:

Miami, OH tackled very well and Iowa sometimes did not…I hope this is the only game this year where I have to say that!
