Allen Gets First Start

Allen Gets First Start

9/2/2002 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation

There were a lot of firsts yesterday for members of the Iowa Hawkeye football team and Antwan Allen was one of them.

He started the first ever game of his Iowa career and turned in a good performance for a rookie.

He made three solo tackles and broke up one pass officially, but the biggest stat is the one that didn’t happen: he did not get beat deep.

”I had some jitters at first then I started to get settled in,” said Allen, who started at right corner in place of Benny Sapp who was dismissed from the Iowa Football team in August.

“When I first got out there, I had to get the feel of the receiver to not let them run by me.”

There were a few occasions when Iowa was playing in zone coverage where Allen gave a very generous cushion, but he proved to have very good closing speed throughout the day.

”That was not our best effort, nor will it be my best effort. It was the first game.” Allen said. “It was nice, but not our best. It felt good to start out strong, but now we have some things to work on.”

During the course of last week, Akron head Coach Lee Owens had publicly acknowledged the fact that Allen was a rookie and that the Zips were likely to test him, something that Allen was aware of.

“I am surprised that they did not come after me more than they did,” Allen said with a grin, something that he could not wipe off of his face in the post game interview area.

”Last night., I was very anxious and woke up like five times in the middle of the night, making sure that my alarm clock was set.”

“I just wanted to get this game underway and get the first one out of the way. Now, it will be a lot easier because its just football.”
