Hawkeye Nation: ITN - Penn State

Hawkeye Nation: ITN - Penn State - DRAFT

9/29/2002 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation

This column is always more enjoyable to write after an Iowa win and is even more interesting as the Hawkeyes have ended their non-conference portion of the 2002 slate. It’s hard to believe that the season is 1/3rd of the way over, but that means that we still have 67% of the games yet to play. I know, it’s the glass half full side coming out again.

First of all, every Iowa team that has started the year 3-1 has made it to a bowl game in the modern era, save one team. The 1977 Hawkeyes started out 4-1, including a forfeit victory against UCLA (Iowa lost the game 16-34 but was later awarded the win and finished 5-6).

Of course, Iowa will have an extra game this season to help them qualify for a bowl.

Nate Kaeding has been getting a lot of love here on HN.com, but why the heck not?

Kaeding as put his foot on the football 27 times this year in scoring situations and he has delivered. No other kicker in the NCAA has done that this year with as many or more attempts. Mike Nugent from Ohio State is 16 of 16 and 8 of 8. Kaeding is also 8 of 8 on field goals and 19 of 19 on PAT’s.

I have no doubt in my mind, if the weather is favorable, that Kaeding could be the difference this weekend in Happy Valley. If Iowa plays error free football, I expect Kaeding to attempt at least three or four field goals on Saturday. In Iowa’s first Big Ten game last year at Purdue, it was the leg of Travis Dorsch that set the tone for the Boilermakers. Kaeding is going to have that chance on Saturday. And remember this: It was the leg of Nate Kaeding that had a huge ‘hand’ in Iowa’s 26-23 win in OT at Penn State in 2000. He made kicks from 49, 47 and 43 yards, plus the game winner from 26 yards.

Jason Baker’s leg also was a huge factor, as he averaged 50.2 yards on five punts in the game. David Bradley would rank in the Top 10 in the nation in punting if he had enough kicks to qualify. He is averaging 44.6 yards per punt on nine attempts. Four of those kicks have been inside the 20-yard line. Iowa ranks 2nd in the nation in net punting average per game.

Fred Russell got the day off on Saturday, but he moved up to #2 in the nation in rushing yards per game and trails the leader by less than two yards per contest. #2 should be ready to go for Iowa on Saturday and he is a weapon that Iowa desperately needs if they want to win their third straight game at Penn State and third overall against the Nittany Lions. Only Alabama and Michigan have ever beaten Penn State three games in a row. Overall, Iowa is 4-3 in games played at Penn State. Larry Johnson of Penn State is 16th in the nation in rushing, averaging 120.6 yards per game.

Déjà vu: Bob Sanders missed the game before Penn State last year and did so again this season as he sat out against the Utah State Aggies. But Iowa’s ‘hit man’ is expected to play this week. Sanders needs just two more tackles to top the 200-tackle mark for his Iowa career. Former Iowa linebacker Larry Station holds the Hawkeye record for tackles in a career with 492 between 1982-85.

Brad Banks ranks 11th in the nation in passing efficiency with a rating of 155.6. Former Hawkeye Jon Beutjer is just ahead of Banks at 155.8, FYI. Zach Mills of Penn State is 20th in the nation. Banks has yet to throw an interception in 2002. Banks also gave the Nittany Lions something else to prepare for last week after gaining nearly 70 yards rushing against Utah State. He had one play called back on a penalty that was a 25-yard scamper.

Iowa ranks 5th in the nation in rushing yards per game, averaging 271.50 yards per game. In their game against Penn State two weeks ago, the Nittany Lions surrendered more than 250-yards on the ground against Nebraska in their 40-7 win against the Cornhuskers. Iowa ranks 4th nationally in total offense, averaging 488.75 yards per game. The 1983 Hawkeyes hold the record for average yards per game in a season with 470.6. This year’s Hawkeyes could crack the top 10 if they can averaged better than 406.9 yards per game.

The Iowa secondary has taken a lot of heat in recent weeks, but they are not along in the Big Ten with regards to giving up a lot of yards. Iowa ranks 114th out of 117 division one teams in pass defense, but Penn State is in the neighborhood at 111th. Ohio State is 112th.

The Nittany Lions are 40th in the nation in rush defense, giving up less than 120 yards per game on the ground. The Hawkeyes are third in the nation against the run, giving up a paltry 46.8 yards per game.

It would make sense that Iowa ranks so well against the run when they have performed so poorly against the pass from a total yardage standpoint. Iowa comes in at 64th in total defense and Penn State is ranked 89th.

Iowa’s offensive line has not allowed a sack in three of their four games this season.

The Big Ten was a perfect 11-0 against MAC conference schools in 2002, 3-1 against the PAC-10 and 2-2 against the Big 12 and Mountain West Conferences. Notre Dame, an independent, beat three Big Ten opponents: Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue.

Iowa ranks first in the Big Ten in the following statistical categories: Rushing offense, rushing defense, scoring offense, total offense, punting and kickoff coverage.

Iowa ranks 2nd or 3rd in the B10 in the following statistical categories: passing efficiency, first downs, third down conversions, opponent third down conversions, sacks against (Penn State #1 there), field goals, PAT kicking and time of possession.

Iowa ranks in the bottom three in the B10 in the following statistical categories: Opponent penalties, pass defense, pass efficiency defense and punt returns.

One final ‘Inside the Numbers’ factoid: I looked over my pre-season football predictions from 2001 and through the first four game of 2002. Overall, that takes into account 15 games. I have been right on 14 of them, with the Iowa State game of last year being the exception (I still think the Hawks would have beaten them if the game would have been played as scheduled, but I digress).

My good friend Bohawk talked me into picking Iowa to beat Michigan during that week last season. I picked Penn State to win this game in my pre-season lay out, but for some reason, I have a good feeling about Iowa’s chances this weekend. Tune in Friday to see if I have changed my mind : )
