Hawkeye Nation: MMQB - Penn State

Hawkeye Nation: MMQB - Penn State - DRAFT

9/29/2002 by Jon Miller of Hawkeye Nation

HN.com: Chuck, what were you feeling during the 4th quarter of the PSU game?

Hartlieb: ”Absolute shock. I knew that PSU would put some kind of run together in the fourth quarter, but it was just déjà vu of the Iowa State game. As ugly as the 4th quarter was, I was as equally impressed that Iowa showed the character and poise that we had talked about at the start of the season to turn it around and win on the road and execute in overtime was, well, awesome.”

HN.com: Brad Banks had another good game and showed poise in the overtime by completing three passes including the game winner. He had a hand in Iowa picking up all three of its third down conversions on the first drive that set the tone for the game. How would you rate his progress thus far?

Hartlieb: “He is getting better across the board each week. My first comment would be congratulations to Ken O’Keefe. Here is an offensive coordinator who has taken his share of heat during his first three years. Maybe some of that is deserving but a lot of it is undeserving. He has put together an offense that performs exceptionally well.”

”The entire group is playing really well, from the wide receivers catching the ball, running great routes and breaking tackles to the obvious line play, the running backs and Brad Banks is playing very well. Maybe he is the best quarterback in the Big Ten right now. You can’t underestimate having to perform in front of 108,000 people in the stands. You are going to have some bad plays, but that guy keeps his poise. He threw three great balls in overtime and I thought that he looked very impressive.”

HN.com: Iowa let another huge lead slip away, but this time they won. They say that the hardest steel is forged in the hottest fires, and Iowa has felt the heat and answered the call this last week. With the ISU loss and now the PSU victory, do you think those experiences will pay dividends?

Hartlieb: “The way I looked at this game was the same as I did the last game, some unique things happen when you are able to overcome some bad breaks or bad play and still win. Then, the results or the advantages that come out of a game like that are more significant.”

”Obviously, they know that they can win in the fourth quarter and on the road. They know that they can score from special teams. They know where their weaknesses are and they went through some more pain in their pass defense but they have another building block to work off of.”

”I thought a real lesson learned as well was that Fred Russell might only be good for 25 to 30 carries. Fred is not the biggest guy in the world and I thought he lost a step in the 4th quarter, but you didn’t learn that the hard way with the loss and now I imagine they might spell him a bit more and make sure that he is only getting 25 carries as opposed to 35 carries.”

”There were four or five things gained from this victory that can set Iowa up extremely well for the rest of the season.”

HN.com: You may have the best perspective about Iowa’s offensive lines over the last 18 years than anyone outside of Kirk Ferentz. You were a backup QB in the mid 80’s and were the starting QB in 1987 & 1988. You watched your brother’s teams closely and have followed the Hawkeye football program every year. How does the 2002 Iowa offensive line stack up against the great line units of the past?

Hartlieb: “We definitely had some great offensive lines in the 1980’s, but being hands on during that period, I think we typically had great team units but only had one or two NFL players on the line at one time.”

”I think this squad might be more like three or four future NFL players and I think they could easily be the best offensive line in Iowa football history and I just don’t throw that out there. You have to earn that and they have to do it for 12 games, but I think Gallery, Steinbach, Nelson and Porter are all in NFL camps in the next two years and I don’t know if we ever really had that before.”

”I think the neat thing is that typically, and offensive line is very dominant in EITHER the running game or the passing game. It’s extremely difficult to be great in both facets and Brad Banks has all day to throw in the pocket and those guys are knocking people off the ball throughout the game.” “The only reason the running game is being stopped at all is that teams are putting eight men in the box and blitzing linebackers, but Iowa still is able to run at times against that through their zone blocking schemes. I can’t say enough about them.” “This is why Kirk Ferentz was brought to Iowa. If there is any one position that you want to be the core of your team and the development of your team, I think that it’s the offensive line and I think that this just spells great things for years to come because now, Ferentz has the nucleus in place.”

HN.com: Chuck, through five games in 2002, Iowa has more net yards rushing than in either the 1999 or 2000 season and their sack totals are way down. How does this happen?

Hartlieb: “Those are awesome stats and I think that one correlation to make is execution on the offensive line. You can look back to the 1997 team and you can see another great NFL like offensive line with Verba, Goff, McKinney still in the NFL, but yet they did not execute half as well as this group does. These guys are playing as a complete unit and they are playing the full four quarters, not just a series here and a series there. It all boils down to execution as a unit.:

HN.com: Should Iowa fans believe in the defensive line now that they have stuff yet another opponent?

Hartlieb: “I would like to see them get more pressure on the quarterback, but they are making the plays. I think they are getting better every week, but I would like to see them squeeze that pocket even more. I still don’t see the up field rush as much as maybe the staff might like to see, but I think the play of the front seven is very solid and they can win with that front seven. It’s just a question of that back four.”

HN.com: From the broken record department, Iowa’s pass defense was exploited, again.

Hartlieb: “I want to remind folks that I am just a fan, I am not in the stadium and I do not have all of the answers and I think that should be noted. My concern has been that Iowa has struggled in their simple dime zone packages as well, that it’s not just on the outside, it’s the post over the top, etc. I think that they are struggling in both zone and man-to-man packages, which is a cause for real concern.”

”All of the DB’s are going to have to get better. If I am reading it right, Norm Parker might be thinking that ‘I am playing a simple dime or cover two zone and am getting beat over the top, giving up the 30 or 40 yard gain as well’, which is the last thing that you think would happen against those sets. So I am sure they are shaking their heads a little bit and they are trying everything they can. That is just going to be the weakness of this team that they are going to have to overcome.”

HN.com: If Iowa is getting beat in their base sets, why not turn up the heat and blitz the house?

Hartlieb: “I think that you say as a coach, that you need to play all packages as well as you possibly can. You can’t give up on the base packages, you have to show the confidence in your team, telling them that you know they can get it done and that you know what your reads and responsibilities and reads are, its just a matter of actually executing them.” “As soon as you show a lack of faith in that and bring eight-man blitzes, you are giving up on certain packages too early in the year that could spell even bigger trouble. I am sure these guys are saying ‘hey, we are doing the right things during the course of the week, we just have to get the kid’s heads in the game all four quarters.’ I bet if you look at the film, they are solid fundamentally in the first half, but something just seems to happen in the second half. I think it’s probably mental as much as physical that the execution is not there are far as their reads in the second half. As a coach, you have to keep the faith and believe that the kids are going to get it going.”

HN.com: Purdue comes to town on Saturday and Iowa native Kyle Orton will make his first start against Iowa. You were an Illinois native, but never got to play against your home state school. Do you think Orton will try to make this a statement game?

Hartlieb: “No, I don’t think so. You look at it as a lot of fun. Kyle is coming in here as a sophomore and he can look at it that he doesn’t have anything to lose and that he will be back in Iowa City one more time before his career at Purdue is over. I think he will get after Iowa and try to knock them out right off the bat. I wouldn’t think that he would be thinking or taking seriously that he only gets one shot to prove himself against the Iowa Hawkeyes.”

”I think he could be dangerous, but momentum is an awfully tough thing to stop and when you can get it, it’s a great advantage. I am not that concerned about the game, as I think Iowa has the momentum. I think that Orton’s arm keeps them in the game within 10 to 20 points, but I think Iowa wins the game pretty handily.”

HN.com: OK, it’s prediction time. Last week you said that if Russell was healthy, that Iowa would win by six to ten points. You were right on. How do you see the game this week, from a scoring standpoint?

Hartlieb: “Let me throw three predictions out there for you. Iowa 31, Purdue 20, Dan McCarney to Michigan State and Bobby Elliot to Iowa State after this year. I want to be the first one on record as saying that.” Chuck Hartlieb is currently a Financial Consultant experienced in asset diversification.
