Purdue rallied for 10 points in the fourth quarter to avoid the upset. Iowa took a 14-13 advantage late in the third quarter on a seven-yard pass from Kyle McCann to Kahlil Hill. But Purdue rallied to take a 20-14 advantage with 12:07 to play and the Boilermakers secured the win on a 37-yard field goal with 1:38 left in the game.

Iowa's first score of the game came in the first quarter when McCann completed an eight-yard scoring pass to FB Jeremy Allen. That tied the score at 7-7 as Purdue had scored on an 86-yard interception return. The Boilermakers led 13-7 at halftime after field goals of 39 and 42 yards. Iowa trailed at halftime despite holding Purdue to two first downs and 58 yards total offense over the first two periods. Purdue ended the game with 217 yards total offense. Iowa recorded 14 tackles for loss in holding Purdue to a season low in total offense. Iowa's third quarter scoring drive of 69 yards was set up by an interception and 19-yard return by DB Bob Sanders. Sanders and LB Fred Barr led Iowa’s defense with 15 tackles each. McCann led the Iowa offense by completing 21-32 passes for 167 yards and two TDs, but the Iowa ground game was held to 33 net yards. WR C.J. Jones had six catches for 77 yards and WR Kahlil Hill had seven receptions for 43 yards.
